This online course provided practical, structured and tested guidance to help attendees improve the management of patients accessing their assessment hotline. Participants refocused on becoming effective telephone triage detectives, navigating the uncertainties of virtual consultations, developing robust assessment tools, strengthening triage pathways, ensuring sustained competency, and exploring effective teamwork within triage services.

Recognising that training time is limited, this essential course delivered focused, practical learning that attendees could immediately apply within their own services. Through evidence-based examples and referral scenarios, participants strengthened their approach to triage, referral and signposting. Interactive presentations helped formalise triage hotlines and promote safe, competent assessment, while closed-room discussions enabled delegates to benchmark their practice and learn from peers. Attendees also developed an agreed action plan, leaving the course with the confidence to implement meaningful improvements in their own services.

This unique training shared practical tools driven by experience and was brought to life by Ali Hodge. Ali was recognised by attendees for her empathy, understanding and insight into the complexities surrounding triage. Previous participants highlighted her “real-world” approach to the challenges faced within services, as well as her passion, energy and realistic understanding of what can be achieved within current NHS resources.

Telephone triage training builds confident assessment, decision making and communication skills whilst the expanding capacity within SACT services supports the development of technical competence, workload management and progression across key capability domains. Compassionate and supportive leadership training strengthens reflective practice and people centred leadership behaviours, enabling staff to evidence professional values and development within the ePortfolio. All of the WMCA commissioned training aligns to the Greater Manchester ePortfolio and ACCEND framework for development.

About the ACCEND Framework
The ACCEND Framework is designed to enhance cancer care by providing a structured approach to education and professional development for healthcare professionals.
- It defines the essential Cancer Capabilities in Practice (CiPs) and offers a tailored educational structure to support progression at every stage of a cancer care career.
- Launched in January 2023, the framework aims to transform career pathways and improve training and development opportunities across the cancer workforce.
- It provides access to the education and training needed to meet role-specific competencies and includes dedicated resources for nurses, allied health professionals and those in cancer-related support roles.
- The ACCEND Framework delivers a nationally agreed career and education structure underpinned by clearly defined capabilities in practice.
